Transitions and Traditions
Many traditions are brought back every year around this time. Some are good and others just produce an incredible amount of stress, tension and suffering. I worked in the Psych Unit as a Mental Health Health Technician for a few years at a hospital in Fletcher, North Carolina and our busiest times were during the holidays.
Often the various personalities and expectations of families coming together created a special entree called stress au gratin.
Einstein said, “To continue doing the same thing and expecting different results is insanity.” How many of us each year go about doing the same things and keep hoping for a different outcome? Maybe this year dad won’t criticize me. Maybe this year I’ll get along with my brother. Maybe this year we won’t have a disaster before I take my next bite of apple pie.
The question to ask is what’s different? Just because it’s another year doesn’t mean that things have changed.
Since you know you can’t change others, the real question to ask is
how are you different?
Many people think, “If only so and so would change, then everything would be great.” The only person you can change is yourself.
What have you done to do that?
Would you like to have different results? Then take stock of YOUR life and what things you have been doing, what are you creating ? Who do you want to be in any given situation. Do you want to be Peace, Love, Joy no matter what’s going on with anyone else ?
As Dr. Phil says, “How’s that working for you?” If it’s not working, decide that you really are willing to do something different. Once you decide, life will start moving to help you to make those changes. Sometimes it looks like just the opposite, since what often happens is what has held you back comes up for you. That’s a gift. It’s saying ok, here’s what has kept you from what you want. The only thing to do is to deal with it. Work it out !
What is needed is the commitment, and then the guidance and support to make it through the process. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. You can create a different life, and make the holidays different.
People respond differently to you once you make YOUR changes.
Take the first step, and believe you can create a new experience within you !
